Campaign Contribution Rules

All donations to Municipal Election Campaigns in Ontario must abide by the rules set out by Elections Ontario.

This includes:

• Only residents of Ontario can make contributions to a candidate's campaign.
• Only individuals are eligible to contribute. Entities such as Corporations, Trade Unions, Service Clubs, etc. are not eligible to contribute. Members of these entities are eligible to contribute individually.
• You may contribute a maximum of $1,200 to any one candidate.
• You may not contribute more than $5,000 in total to candidates for offices on the same council.
• Contributions greater than $25 may not be made in cash. All contributions above $25 must be made by cheque, money order, or by a method that clearly shows where the funds came from.
• If the total value of your contribution to any one candidate is greater than $100, your name and address will be recorded in the candidate's financial statements. The financial statement is a public document.
• Contributions are not tax deductible.
• If the candidate has a surplus at the end of their campaign, those funds are turned over to the municipality.
