Defining Responsible Growth

Everyone is saying it, but what does it really mean?

Over the past few weeks, it’s been encouraging to see nearly every candidate step forward to express support for responsible growth in Mitchell and West Perth. When multiple people running for local office agree on a central theme, it signals just how important the issue is to our community’s future.

However, for me, responsible growth isn’t a new talking point for campaign season, it has been a central focus of my campaign and one of my primary motivations for running for Council.

Proven History, Not Just Campaign Promises

I was the first candidate in this election to center my campaign on responsible growth, but more importantly, I have a proven record of standing up and speaking on this exact issue directly in front of Council.

When a development proposal and planning decision came before West Perth, I didn’t wait for an election to pay attention. I attended the meeting, reviewed the planning documents, and voiced my concerns about how growth impacts our existing neighborhood character, local infrastructure, and community resources.

Advocating for smart, sustainable development requires doing the homework, showing up when decisions are being made, and being willing to speak on behalf of residents.

The specific development proposal I spoke out about directly affected me and kickstarted my interest in municipal planning and development. I live in the neighborhood that was being considered for rezoning, and I wanted to ensure that any changes would be responsible, sustainable, and in line with the character of our community.

With my bid for a position on Council, I am now in a position to continue advocating for responsible growth and ensuring that our community’s voice is heard in every development decision, not just the ones directly affecting me and my neighbours.

What Does “Responsible Growth” Actually Mean?

Because “responsible growth” has become a popular phrase this election season, it’s worth breaking down what it actually means in practice for West Perth. It isn’t about stopping progress, nor is it about saying yes to every developer request. It’s about balance, planning, and long-term vision.

Here is what responsible growth means to me:

1. Smart Infrastructure Planning First

Growth cannot outpace the capacity of our roads, water, sewer, and emergency services. Responsible growth means ensuring infrastructure upgrades are planned and funded before or alongside new developments, not as an afterthought when existing capacity is stretched thin.

2. Preserving Community Character & Farmland

West Perth is built on rich agricultural roots and vibrant, tight-knit neighborhoods. Development should complement the existing fabric of our community. That means respecting residential density transitions, protecting valuable surrounding farmland, and encouraging infill where appropriate rather than unchecked sprawl.

3. Diverse, Accessible Housing Choices

Responsible growth recognizes that our community needs housing options for every stage of life, from young families buying their first home to seniors looking to downsize while staying in the town they love. Encouraging a thoughtful range of housing types keeps Mitchell affordable and accessible.

4. Ensuring Growth Pays for Growth

Existing taxpayers shouldn’t bear the financial burden of new developments. Through proper development charges and clear municipal agreements, new projects must contribute fairly to the infrastructure and community assets they rely on.

Looking Ahead

Agreement on the principle of responsible growth across candidates is a positive step for West Perth. But the real work comes down to action and consistency.

When Council considers future zoning amendments, subdivision plans, and budget allocations, we need leaders who have already demonstrated a commitment to asking tough questions and protecting the interests of current and future residents.
