Election Day is here

This is the short version of everything: voting closes tonight at 8 p.m. sharp, it’s by phone or internet only, and it takes about five minutes.

If you’ve already voted, thank you — truly. You can stop reading and go enjoy your Monday. Maybe check on one neighbour first.

If you haven’t, here’s your whole to-do list: find the Voter Information Letter that came in the mail (the one with your PIN and the voting phone number and website on it), pick up the phone or open your computer, and make your choices before 8 tonight. In the Mitchell Ward council race you can vote for up to three candidates, and those three choices decide who sits at the council table for the next four years.

Letter gone missing? The Voter Assistance Centre at the West Perth Municipal Office, 160 Wellington Street in Mitchell is open to help today, and the Clerk’s office is at 519-348-8429. Please don’t let a lost envelope make the decision for you.

I also want to say the quiet part out loud before the results are anybody’s guess: thank you. Thank you to everyone who opened a door, asked a hard question on a doorstep, read a post, argued a point at a game, or told me flat-out what West Perth gets wrong. Running for council in the town where you’re raising your kid is a humbling thing, and this community has been generous with its time and its honesty. And to the volunteers and election staff running a phone-and-internet vote across the municipality — thank you for making it work.

Whatever tonight brings, I’m proud of how this campaign was run and grateful to live somewhere people care this much. Now, if you haven’t yet: go vote.
